It is just into end which starts to break down, nevertheless the smack-right up finale rescues it in the ‘red’. Admirably staged and you may intelligently dialogued, it will have zero great difficulties from inside the life off their very unattractive name.” [ 8 ]

Monthly Movie Bulletin said “The movie movements at the an instant speed, brand new conversation is smooth and you will characterisations generally productive. Cock Powell and you will Evelyn Keyes direct brand new throw expertly, because the investigator was used big aplomb of the that person identity, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]

Richard Brody regarding The newest Yorker noted “Which terse and tight motion picture noir is according to the brand new romantic and you will top-notch problems of your term character, new criminal mastermind (starred by Dick Powell) trailing a trendy illegal casino. The film’s writer and you will director, Robert Rossen, sets up good multidimensional chess games, having mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, their employer (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), a cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a great scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever brother (Nina Foch) has worked in the casino and you can dated a beneficial corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). New caustically epigrammatic software, the new cast’s suavely managed body gestures off like and possibility, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may stylishly cocky photographs (and additionally their political conscience) make this pugnacious yet detailed spectacle a low profile vintage of one’s category.” [ ten ]

Photo have motion and suspense, and you may certain small satisfies off humor to include style. Ace shows of the Knob Powell, while the a playing domestic overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, due to the fact a police inspector, including within the rating . As the plot observe a familiar trend, the newest characterizations try fresh as well as the performances adequate so you’re able to overbalance. Dialogue are terse and topical, preventing the emotional, phoney reach. Uncommon digital camera angles arrive once in a while to intensify attract and you will temporarily arrest the eye. Strong teamplay by the Robert Rossen, increasing since the director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, completely new blogger and you can user manufacturer, plus helps with making it a mellow design.” [ eleven ]

Its mainly an issue of seeing Mr. Powell experience his paces smartly if you are a massive throw out-of stars and performers promote him vintage assistance. Evelyn Keyes plays the nice little woman exactly who brings out brand new finest in your and you will Ellen Drew is the smooth and slinky vixen whom will get him on jams. Thomas Gomez is actually fatty since the villain and you may Lee J. Cobb really does a separate able trip as the a weary cops inspector just who eventually closes your situation. A lot of consuming and smoking is done by the all worried.” [ 12 ]
